NBC learns most wanted man in Iraq killed by Special Ops Forces

al-Zarqawi killed

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed overnight in an operation by U.S. Special Operations Forces, U.S. military officials told NBC News on Thursday.

ABC News reported that he was killed in a U.S. air attack on a house in Baghdad.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was expected to make an important announcement at a news conference in Baghdad on Thursday, one of his advisers said.

Al-Maliki adviser Adnan al-Kazimi told The Associated Press that he had heard a report that Jordanian terrorism mastermind al-Zarqawi may have been killed late Wednesday in Baghdad.

Al-Kazimi said he could not confirm the report. He said al-Maliki was scheduled to shortly give a news conference along with the top U.S. general in Iraq, Gen. George Casey.

[identity profile] libran24.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"that fucker"?

Yeah, and now, total peace, right?

"The insurgency is finally in its last throes!"

Keep it up and, should anything happen to Bolton, you could be our ambassador to the UN.

Yes...fucker. As in fucking evil bastard that beheaded people.

I'm sorry you are disappointed that a fucking terrorist is dead..I know that makes liberals upset.

[identity profile] libran24.livejournal.com 2006-06-08 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not disappointed.

I'm angry. The backlash is going to be terrible. And I'm sure it's not like he had anyone to easily transition into his position should he be killed.

Is it too late for you to enlist and go over there and fight it yourself?

I disagree with Iraq, but I'm glad al-Zarqawi is gone. I am all for the Afghanistan mission and am proud of our boys over there. I'm also glad that they took the intelligence seriously and busted those terrorists in Toronto. They could've done a lot of damage.

I didn't say you did. I am just speaking my mind since we are talking about terrorists.

[identity profile] nodeg.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
So we shouldn't kill terrorists because they might kill us back? Give me a break. They're already doing everything that they can to kill coalition soldiers and civilians in dozens of nations. I don't think that this is going to make them try harder than they already are.

[identity profile] libran24.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It must be nice to be so confidently living in fantasyland.

Killing terrorists will only make them want to kill us more.

Ever hear of the Hydra?

Ever hear of the illegal occupation of Palestine?

We, whether the United States or Canada, are not blameless, and it's about time we wake up and realize that.

[identity profile] nodeg.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You tell me I'm living in fantasy land and then you quote greek myth?

I've heard of the Hydra. Do you think that if Heracles had decided to just stop trying to kill it that it would have left people alone? If the legend of the Hydra teaches anything it's that you have to do more than chop the heads off of some beasts. You also have to burn the roots.

Who gives a shit if terrorists want to kill us more? You think it would be better to let them all live and kill at their current rate? Or do you figure that if they are left alone they will become peaceful? They're all heartless killers and deserve what they get. If their leaders are killed their ability to kill, and recruit other killers is diminished.

What would you rather do anyway? Give them all chairs in the senate?

And what the fuck does Canada have to do with the occupation of Palestine by Israel?

[identity profile] libran24.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
ok, Canada may not have as much to do with Israel as my country does, but the Israeli occupation is a prime reason for terrorism, right?

They're not just doing it because they're evil.

...and regarding Hydra, I'm not saying that it shouldn't be dealt with at all, I'm saying there needs to be a comprehensive solution that will cause the terrorists to stop killing, not just more violence.

Because violence breeds violence. Breeds violence breeds violence.

And I don't make any claims to know what this comprehensive solution is, though I do know that violence is not the key to this house.

[identity profile] nodeg.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
So there's a non-violent solution to terrorism out there, but you don't know what it is. And so you are critical of the U.S. military for dropping two 500lb bombs on a guy who is responsible for the deaths of thousands? This guy has beheaded people with a dull serrated knife on video just to make a statement. His death, and the deaths of other al-queda members where he was probably saved the lives of thousands.

Do you really think that all mideast terrorism is about the Americans supplying arms to Israel? I'm pretty critical of Israel and their "eye for an eye" policy against the hamas, and their annexing of land. That being said, the only reason why the Americans supplied so much equipment was because Israel was attacked by every bordering nation in the first decade of their creation. Without the support of the U.S. Israel would be a mass-grave. After this period Israel has used this equipment as it sees fit, regardless of U.S. government input. If you know anything about U.S. politics you will know that Israel has more lobbying power in the U.S. than any other nation, and so due to the power these lobbyists wield it is next to impossible for the U.S. to act against Israel. Really the U.S. has done two things that effect Israel:

1. Stopped it from being destroyed.
2. Supported it politically due to a large and influential Jewish population within the U.S.

There are a lot of reasons why these groups hate the U.S. and the west, but the main reasons they thrive has nothing to due with ideology. It's more about money. You can see this more in Afghanistan, a country that before it was occupied supplied 90% of the worlds heroin supply, but even in Iraq the higher echelons of al-qaeda you can bet your ass it's as much about the money they are paid by extremists around the world that they keep fighting.

[identity profile] libran24.livejournal.com 2006-06-10 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
but the main reasons they thrive has nothing to due with ideology.

If they didn't believe in the things they were fighting for, then why fight?

Also, re: Israel, they started the Six-Day War.

All other wars were in response to this one, and Israel's taking of Sinai.

And Israel started the 1982 Lebanon War.

Even as far back as 1946, with the bombing of the King David Hotel...that was Irgun.

I think one of the problems with the media in the US is, probably because of the Jewish lobby and the corporate ownership of the news, Israel is painted as an innocent lamb, and nothing is said of Irgun or the Stern Gang.

(Irgun, who killed about 244 people, 5 of them Jews, in the 1930s, none of which is mentioned anymore)

(Irgun carried out its campaigns as a reprisal for the Arabs' "Great Uprising", which killed about 320 Jews. And so it goes.)
