Homemade Glazed Doughnuts
I got the urge to make doughnuts last night. I don't know what came over me. I've never made them before, but I just had to try. And OMG these were the BEST glazed doughnuts I've ever had. Ever. My husband thinks so too. I'm defintely filing this recipe away.
Glazed Doughnuts
Yield: 48 doughnuts
INGREDIENTS FOR DOUGHNUTS
DIRECTIONS
Melt butter in hot milk, add 1 tsp sugar and salt. Allow to cool.
Beat in yeast, nutmeg, eggs, remaining sugar, and 3 cups flour. Add rest of flour (dough will be sticky). Knead for 5 minutes then allow to rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
Roll out dough, cut into shapes, then allow to rise for 30-45 minutes. Do not re-roll dough. (You don’t need a fancy doughnut cutter, just use 2 different sized glasses, or biscuit cutters. I cut up the leftover bits into odd shaped doughnut holes.)
Heat oil to 365°F and fry 1 - 2 minutes on each side or until brown.
Let them rest on a paper towel. Dip in glaze while still slightly warm.
Doughnut Glaze
INGREDIENTS FOR GLAZE
DIRECTIONS
These measurements are all approximate. I used a glaze method that my husband showed me when he made scones.
Mix the first 3 ingredients together in a bowl (big enough bowl to dunk and coat your doughnuts). Add the water last, and add just a little bit at a time. You want your glaze to be runny.
You can reuse the glaze that runs off your doughnuts. You can let them rest on a wire rack and catch the drippings underneath.
