The Lee Valley/Canada Post Problem

Lee Valley Tools is a big name in Canada. They produce woodworking and gardening tools and distribute their products worldwide through mail-order. In 1998, Leonard Lee, owner of Lee Valley Tools, founded the branch Canica to work closely with Ottawa doctors to design instruments to meet the ergonomic and safety needs of the hospitals in Canada and the US.

Mr. Lee has taken action against Canada Post with a full page newspaper ad in Wednesday’s Ottawa Citizen. He has correspondence, and the history of problems going back to December 2003, documented on his website. If you have a few minutes, it’s a very interesting read. Mr. Lee is very well spoken, and does not beat around the bush.

I hope something good comes out of this publicity. I always thought Canada Post overcharged. We send 2 – 3 medium parcels out for the Christmas holidays every year and it costs us about $100 for postage. Mailing a small package of cookies to the US costs $20. At their price you’d expect prompt delivery, but half the time the mail is late.

Down with overcharging!

i sent my mom a package on 1st december and she hasn't even got it yet!!!!!!!!!!!! it was a christmas present weighing nearly 3kg and it cost 27 euro to send!

Holy cow, that's a long time to wait! Hopefully it won't be damaged by the time she gets it. I once got a package in the mail marked "fragile" and the box was litterally ripped wide open and missing huge chunks of cardboard. I think I got everything that was inside.

that really sucks!!! i will have to see can i track down the package cos i think over 6 weeks is too long!! i am waiting for a package to arrive from the UK that was sent on the 18th december too! the UK is next door! should only take 5-7 days. so pathetic!

i agree. supposedly its high, because email is taking over...i doubt that's the reason.

I heard that years ago... I think it's an urban legend. They aren't losing money, but even so it's a different type of business. I read that they increased their prices by something like 47% over the last 3 years. Damn, I can't even keep stamps with the current postage because it goes up before I can use them all.

...is definitely not the place to go if you want speedy delivery, as they don't always seem to know the meaning of that.

Sigh!!!

And they should be basing parcel costs on the weight and not the size.

When a parcel goes through customs, they ask about the weight of the parcel. Not the size of it. So why doesn't CANADA POST do this?

My father has ordered a bunch of tools from them. Don't know if he still gets their catalogs or not. But yes, canadian postage is way too expensive!

I get their catalogues too. We have a store here, but I've never been in it. It's not really on my route so I never remember to stop in... but I want to go soon.
