For fuck sakes, I can't make a cute little dumb post on my dog without it turning into fucking drama. Good grief, last I checked last night, someone was commenting about how repulsive it is that my dog eats cat shit and then started to lecture me on how I should raise her. The tone I got from it was that she was better than me.

I was very polite and explained that everything is normal at my house and I think blocking off my litter box is a bad idea. End of story.. Ooops No it wasn't. I come back and she deleted all her comments and removed me from her friends list.

OK, normally I don't fucking care because it's usually someone that I have nothing in common with anyways. I actually liked this woman, and I wasn't even the one to get into the drama with her. I was still sleeping! lol

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW ........... block off that litter box by facing it to the wall if there is a hood on it. Not good at all for the pup to be eating that stuff, let alone the smell of her breath and the kisses she gives you!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
Sounds as if she is getting bored. Have you tried giving her a bone to chew on and some toys? If she continues, I would nip it in the bud immediately before she becomes chronic. If that means crating her while you are out, then so be it.

I've never had a dog that didn't eat cat litter. I can't move it anywhere else because then the cats won't be able to access it. Vicki is crate trained, but if she's out it only takes her a second to sneak off into the basement without us noticing. She has tonnes of toys & bones all over the house and is always given cookies.

How about a baby gate for the basement stairs? You might be able to purchase a cat door and install it on your door?

my dog eats her own shit and the cats shit from the litter box. her breath stinks but it doesn't mean it's a chronic problem or ever will be. and i don't think this habit is a boredom habit, my dog is well occupied with all her toys. female dogs are notorious for eating shit.

[livejournal.com profile] thekidsmum 1:28am
Well I used to own a kennel with 30 german shepherd dogs and the only time that I ran across dogs eating shit was 1) not enough food, 2) habit forming from when they were pups 3) boredom. When I boarded dogs that used to eat their excrement, with permission from the owner, I would train them out of it by sprinking pepper on it, or putting garlic in their food - it worked well enough. They took one sniff of it and sneezed and walked away. If the cat is on a worming program that is one thing, but if it isn't then the dog can ingest the eggs.
Anyways, here is something that might be helpful:
Some dogs will learn this
behavior from other dogs. In some cases, eating feces may be an attention-seeking
behavior. For some dogs it is possibly due to anxiety or boredom. Most often the
motivation for eating feces is just not known.

Owners find this habit in their pet disgusting -- particularly when the consumed feces are
thrown up all over the new carpet. In addition to being socially unacceptable, eating feces
exposes the dog to parasites and diseases. So, what is a dog owner to do?

"Eating feces is a problem that is easier to prevent than to cure," says Dr. Eurell. "Don't
allow the opportunity to arise. Keep the dog's yard clean by disposing of feces promptly.
Move the cat box out of the dog's reach. If cleaning the outdoor area is not feasible, then
keep the dog on a leash or use a muzzle when outside."

There are some "cures" that have been used with limited success. Punishment generally only
works in the early stages, before the behavior becomes habitual. Feeding the dog MSG,
garlic, or pumpkin is believed to give feces a bad taste, making it less attractive to the dog.

i'm sorry, but my dog goes through heart worm prevention and is checked for parasites. there is nothing indicating that she is ill with anything funky. because this conversation is being done over the internet, i can't tell if you're trying to lecture me on this topic or not. beagles eat shit because they can smell the nutrients from their food still. that was right from a breeder. my dog doesn't barf up the crap she eats either, neither does my aunts dog. anyway, i'm tired of arguing about this. some breeders make sure their dogs go to good homes, some are in it just for the cash. my point is, everyone is different with their animals. it's not these dogs are making a feast out of it. it's an occasional thing. and in fact my dog rarely does it now. i don't think this is anything to fret about.

I do not think it is necessary to make pot shots concerning breeders, nor wonder if I am lecturing you. This is someone else's journal and I feel that you should be respecting that and not trying to cause drama.

causing drama? mmmhmm! who cares if her dog eats shit! my dog does too. woopdeedoo, we've commited crimes according to you.

kthanx.

I'm not going to reply to anybody's comment on my last post. I appreciate everything you guys have said. I know Vicki isn't repulsive and I'll still take her kisses. lmao Some of you have said that it's a defficiency in her diet, and I appreciate your knowledge. I never heard that before (well, I know the same is said about humans when they get cravings), but I know it's not uncommon for dogs to do this. Any humour you guys have given is also appreciated. I'm still laughing at how silly our pets are! [livejournal.com profile] flydovefly, thanks for giving your input. I agree with you completely and don't understand why she went off on you. And [livejournal.com profile] giruff, I am always happy to hear your thoughts because you have a lot of experience and I can learn from you.

While I'll continue to teach Vicki not to eat the cats' shit, I don't think I can stop her from sniffing their asses. lol

My dog does that too, and it's nasty. :( We tried facing the litter boxes to the wall, but she still gets in there somehow. We have a small place so it's physically impossible to move the box out of the dog's reach. Dogs are gross, when you think about it. But I still love them. ;)
